Labor Day Fun
When you look at a September calendar and note that the first Monday says “Labor Day,” do you find yourself reflecting on the triumphs of the labor movement, the dedication of our unions or the challenges of the American worker through history? If you’re like most of us, the answer is probably not. Labor Day means the end of summer and time to go back to school. It means the last chance to have a memorable weekend.
In short—it's time to party.
Here are some ideas to help you celebrate this annual end of summer holiday:
Add a little luxury. Glamping has become popular over the last few years. It means glamorous camping—basically bringing along the little niceties that regular camping doesn't provide. This idea can make anything you choose to do for Labor Day weekend a little more exciting. If you're camping out, bring an air mattress and some nice bedding for that luxurious night's rest. A backyard barbecue can seem a lot more special if you use a pretty table cloth and nice dishes on the old picnic table. Even if you have to spend some or all of the holiday weekend working, pamper yourself this Labor Day with some sort of indulgence: a gourmet lunch (even if it's from home), a comfy pillow for your desk chair, flowers for your desk, etc. Whether it's just for a table for one or a big shindig with all your friends and family, take the time to add that extra touch.
Bring on the adventure! One of the benefits of living in our modern times is that information is just a few clicks away. Looking for some events or things to do in your area? Check out these sites:
- Eventbrite and Eventful have information about many of the festivals, concerts, sporting events, and other activities in your area.
- Groupon not only offers great deals, but is an excellent resource for finding local events and activities you may not have even known existed.
- Use Meetup to find groups in your community that share your particular passion.
Celebrate Labor Day… with some work--?! Why not spend the last weekend of the summer finally tackling that home improvement job you've put off for the last three months? Invite some fun friends, provide some food, and have at it. For an extra touch, have the video camera available for those Laurel and Hardy moments that inevitably happen. You get to have some fun and finally get that project done! Next time around, you can return the favor and make another great memory.
However you decide to enjoy your Labor Day weekend, remember to make sure your summer goes out with a bang!
