Mindset—Visualization

Mindset—Visualization

Visualization is the process of creating images in your mind of having or doing something that you want. For years, psychologists have used this technique to help people create desired emotional states, enhance performance in various skills, and achieve goals. Pro athletes such as Tiger Woods, Muhammad Ali and Jack Nicklaus have all admitted to using visualization to improve their game. This practice has even helped a man who is paralyzed in all four limbs utilize a computer with his mind.

Research shows that our thoughts create the same mental instructions in our brains as actions. Therefore, visualizing something you want actually trains the brain to accomplish that feat. Studies also show that visualization increases confidence, creativity and self-efficacy, improves motivation and motor performance, and reduces anxiety.

Wondering how you can get started? Begin by spending at least one full minute per day visualizing something that you want. Work on bringing in all of your senses—imagine how it looks, sounds, smells, tastes, and feels. It is best to complete this visualization first thing in the morning. Make it part of your morning routine and find out what you are really capable of accomplishing!
