Getting Ready For Q3: What Are Your Goals?
When Walt Disney set out to create Disneyland, his goal was simple. All he wanted was to make a magical place where families’ dreams would come true. It didn’t happen overnight, of course. It took a year and a day of construction and over $17 million just to get it opened.
Can you imagine tackling that “simple” task? Disney might have been a visionary, but even he knew that goal was huge. When we make our business goals broad and overreaching, we can easily become overwhelmed. That’s why we need to break them down into quarterly goals that are far more achievable. This is where SMART goals come in. To be most effective, your goals need to be Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Among other things, being ‘Smart’ about your goals helps keep you on track and gives you a way to measure your progress
With all this talk about goals, Q3 is coming up, and it can be a good opportunity to think further into the future during those ‘lazy’ summer days. You’ve heard plenty about setting your goals for each quarter, but what about things you may not have thought about? For example, have you given any thought to your taxes? The nice weather provides a good opportunity to set up an appointment with your tax preparer. What about your insurance needs? What seems like adequate coverage now may not serve you as well down the line.
Have you thought about building a better world? There’s a lofty goal, but one well worth attempting. Sustainability is something many consumers are interested in these days, so it makes sense to make changes in the way you do business. Maybe it’s time to give some consideration to the subject of diversity. Even if you’re a one-person operation and not ready to hire more employees, think about how welcoming your business might be to people who are different from you. Would it be beneficial for you to attend an event where you can meet other people who have fresh ideas and views? A new perspective might be just what you need to take your business to the next level.
One of the reasons Disney was able to create his magical kingdom was because he always kept an eye on the future. Remember to do the same for yours.
